Dear Friend,
Hello again from the "fitness guy"! It was great meeting you at this year's National Youth Workers Convention. In case you forgot, my name is Jason Rhymer and I am a professional fitness trainer and movement coach in Charlotte, NC. I have been running my own training business for 8 years and have also been involved with youth mentorship and counseling for 17 years. I have combined these two passions into one amazing product that will transform your youth ministry. It is called...

SMX Logo

Sunday Morning Xtreme combines scripture, prayer, and sharing stations with the basics of resistance training and some creative cardio and agility challenges to give your youth an amazing experience that makes them stronger physically, spiritually, and socially!
I firmly believe in the saying "All the Body, All the Time". This means that you are only as strong as your weakest link. Every part of you (physical, spiritual, emotional, social, mental, etc.) is interrelated. If we are "down" physically, it can affect our spiritual and mental make-up. If we feel far away from God, we may be less inclined to train our bodies, or to be socially involved. Hey..wait! There's some cool scripture about that:
"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ"
-- 1 Corinthians 12:12
Think about the time you spend with your youth right now. Are you really changing their lives spiritually? How about physically? Does your group love each other and encourage each other to succeed?
I GUARANTEE that if you are helping your kids get healthier spiritually, physically, and socially every time you see them, a transformation will happen in your group:
* Your youth will feel acceptance and improved self-esteem
* Your youth will see their relationship with God as something more than just showing up to church
* Your youth will invite their friends
SMX will accomplish all these things and more for you! It worked with our youth in Charlotte, NC, and I know it will work for you!

Check out this testimony from a youth minister and Christian educator:

I know what you are thinking...that's from a youth minister! What did the kids who were actually doing the work think about SMX?

"For me, one of the critical attractions, and specific deterrents, to participation in any physical exercise program is the level of personal interaction with fellow participants and the leaders that can keep me coming back and motivated. For this reason, the basis of the SMX program in a group of already familiar participants is the genius of it; going through potentially challenging exercises while you can laugh with your partner or group makes it much more enjoyable and more successful in continued attendance.

A good half of my enjoyment of SMX was the interaction between social enjoyment and the accomplishment of physical goals. The other half was the close fit between the biblical passages and spiritual reflections and the activities for the morning. In our busy lives, particularly high school, it is difficult to find an application of religious teachings during the secular parts of our day, but SMX pushes you right into the direct correlation between physical fitness and service to God. That thought was quite revolutionary for me; I had previously considered the usage of ones body to do God's work in the community, but SMX revealed a whole new dimension of praise to God and a new road to communion with Christ. Repetitive Sunday participation truly bridged a gap I hadn't considered before and, personally, prepared me for the hardships of college life."

--Katie Lank

SMX was awesome. I think the program was a phenomenal experience and very innovative concept. The change to a physical Sunday morning "lesson" was a great idea and an amazing spiritual rejuvenation. Thanks for the experience!

SMX is Physical: A fun and energetic group workout that can easily be tailored to each persons ability. There is achievable challenge for the student athlete and for the "never-exercised-before" couch potato. The SMX workout is full of variety with different activities at each of the exercise stations, focusing on the 5 basic resistance exercises, and offering some speed and agility challenges.

SMX is Spiritual: In addition to the physical exercise stations there are stations where the SMX athletes read scripture and pray. The idea of building body strength and spiritual strength at the same time using the same approach is a powerful lesson for Christian youth today. The scripture and prayer themes for SMX include:

  • The Power of God’s Love
  • Strength Through Christ
  • Strong Bodies = Strong Faith
  • The Body is a Temple
  • The Power of Forgiveness
  • Sharing Your Strength With Others
  • Changing Into the Person God Has Called You to Be
  • Run the Race!

SMX is Social: The SMX athletes use each station in pairs or small groups. There is a sharing station where the athletes are encouraged to discuss their thoughts and feelings about what they experienced. These discussions are guided by specific questions that tie in with the scripture and prayer stations.

Listen to how excited this youth minister with 15 years experience is about SMX at the National Youth Workers Convention:

SMX changed my view of worship. Rather than being just the traditional singing and praying, worshipping God is a lifestyle; a healthy body is praise to God's creation.

--Kate Weddington

Last year, I was under a great deal of stress and took it out on my body in the most unhealthy of ways.  I became extremely insecure about my weight, mistreating the body with which God had blessed me.  It was then that I became involved with SMX. Things turned around completely.  The combination of prayer, scripture, and exercise made me realize, for the first time in my life, how blessed I am to have a healthy body.  SMX has taught me to love the body God granted me, and to mistreat such a spectacular gift is to abuse God's graciousness.  I thank Jason Rhymer and SMX for teaching me the importance of physical, spiritual, and social fitness!

Another great testimony from a happy youth worker...

SMX will bring a dynamic new form of worship and praise to the youth of your church. Exercise for the physical body is an easy and fun concept for your youth to understand. Exercise to strengthen faith and spiritual armor is more difficult for young people to grasp and master. By combining physical and spiritual workouts in this program, your youth will easily see the correlation between being spiritually and physically fit.

SMX includes:

  • Flexible workout stations that can be tailored to use whatever fitness equipment is available to you.

  • Exercises that can be adjusted to any fitness level

  • Prayer and scripture stations that challenge the athletes to exercise their spiritual muscles.

  • A sharing station where the athletes can discuss what the SMX experience means to them.

  • A sense of fellowship as the athletes complete each station in pairs or small groups.

Childhood obesity is now parent's No. 1 health concern for kids in 2008, topping smoking and drug abuse.  This is according to the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health.  In 2007, childhood obesity ranked third among parents’ top 10 overall health concerns for kids. In the United States 12.5 million children are overweight, and are at greater risk of serious health problems and diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, according to the Office of the Surgeon General.

Overweight children and adolescents are also more likely to become obese as adults. For example, one study found that nearly 80% of overweight children between the ages of 10-15 were obese adults at the age of 25. Another study found that 25% of obese adults were overweight children. Exercise is a call to action by the acting US Surgeon General, Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, who suggests that children and teens have 60 minutes of moderate physical activity everyday.

This is one more item in busy over-stressed parent's list of concerns. By providing the means, motivation, and instruction with Sunday Morning Xtreme to get kids moving you will put parents at ease. You will also set a potentially life changing precedent in the lives of your youth.

Bottom line: Kid obesity rates are rising, meanwhile PE funding is taking a hit...The church may be the answer!

Although I only participated in SMX one time during the summer, it had a huge impact on me. I had never met Jason before SMX and he made the experience very warming and welcoming. The actual event, Sunday Morning Extreme (SMX) was very well planned and thought out. Jason used physical fitness to attract young people to church. He also shows that one can alter and strengthen one’s body while also strengthening one’s faith. Jason used the right combination of exercise with passage reading to prove this point. I loved SMX and wish that I had gone to more of them.

--Bowman Hitchens

SMX was truly an amazing experience for me. I had always gone to Sunday school during the summer just because the rest of my family went. After I went to Sunday Morning X-treme for the first time, I was ready to go to church every Sunday after that! I really enjoyed every aspect of the program. The exercising was a plus for me especially because I play volleyball and it gave me a little extra workout during the week. Jason, the leader, worked with everyone and made sure that each exercise was completed correctly and appropriately for each individual person. The exercising was great but the spiritual part of it was fun too. We would read small pieces of scripture, have a discussion, and say a few prayers in between each of the exercising stations. For me, it was the perfect amount of religion for the day, enough to make you think but not enough to bore you.

In Ephesians 6:10-18 we are asked to put on the full armor of God. The apostle Paul was using an analogy of the readiness of a Roman soldier to speak about the spiritual tools and strength of the Christian. Paul used an unlikely iconic figure of his day, the Roman soldier, to make his spiritual point. If Paul were writing Ephesians today he would have likely used the athlete for his analogy. The athlete stands for strength, accomplishment, and success in our culture. SMX takes the practice and discipline of the athlete and applies it to growing stronger spiritually. Your youth will put into practice the ideas that regular movement will strengthen their bodies and regular short intervals of prayer and scripture reading will strengthen their spirit.

After that youth minister returned to his home and looked into SMX, he sent me this email:

"Hey man, I came back, checked out the DVD and LOVE IT! I have already started getting leaders together and we are starting in January as a small group! Truly this is one of the best Idea's that I have seen in a long time! I was talking to some students yesterday and they were excited about it. I hope that you guys are doing well and Keep it up! Our churches need new and fresh ideas in communicating THE message of Jesus!
